In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

All power belongs to The Most Beneficent and Most Merciful ALLAH subhan wata'ala..

It is NOT Magic in most cases?

We tend to put all the blame for any misfortune/problem on other people and most conveniently on magic. Instead of looking at our sins and other reasons we immediately accept any suggestion (from anybody at all), that someone has done something to us.. Islam does NOT permit us to make such assumptions about other people especially for Muslims, mu'mins and more so for ones own relatives. In 99% of cases we only incorrectly assume that magic has affected us and it may be true in a very rare case.

What is Magic (Sehr) and Soothsaying

Magic generally includes:-

a) Writing and reciting some special chants and spells, burning of particular objects.

b) Making a picture, blowing ,tying knots, burying special objects in particular places so that the person for whom it is intended is affected eg;located, put to sleep, made ill etc.

c) Bringing about some un-natural  events by means of charms, amulets or talisman or potions.

Soothsaying is fortune telling, going to people (pir, babas etc.) for predictions, involving Jinn or spirits for non natural events, some scholars equate it with Magic.

One of the shaytan’s endeavors in their attempt towards human destruction is to go up to the heaven and eavesdrop any news to carry on to earth. This news will be passed on to the fortune-tellers.

Narrated A’isha (ra), I heard Allah's Apostle saying,"The angels descend the clouds and mention this or that decreed in the Heaven. The devils listen stealthily to such matter, come down to inspire the soothsayers with it, and the latter would add to it one-hundred lies of the own." [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadith Number 432]

About time of the Prophet (saw) mission there were many meteors and other strange appearances in the heavens, which tradition says, frightened the astrologers from the high observatories where they used to watch at night, and threw out all their calculations.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

"And (the Jinn who had listened to the Qur'an said): We had sought the heaven but had found it filled with strong guardians and meteors. And we used to sit on places (high) in it to listen. But he who listens now finds a flame in wait for him."

[M.M.Pickthall Qur'an Translation, Surah Al-Jinn 72:8-9]

Islamic View: Magic is unconditionally and absolutely haram/prohibited. A person who indulges in magic and does not repent is punishable by Death in an Islamic society, as it is equivalent to shirk and severly criticized in many many ahadith.

It is haram to  learn, teach, perform magic and indulge in soothsaying. (for any cause whatsoever). It is also haram to go to soothsayers (pirs, babas, magicians) and act on their advice. Earnings from magic and payments to magicians also come under haram category.

Magic is evil:  The starting point of Magic involves physical disrespect to Qur'an in many cases! The sorcerer discontinues all good actions and concentrates on performing satanic rituals, committing adultery, drinking blood etc. These acts bring the magician close to Satan so that he is helped in his magic. Obviously the closer to Satan a man is the further he is from any kind of truth and Islam.

People who have had experience with such Black Magic and Satanic Possession have related that the following are among the signs of a person who is possessed by jinn (or Satan):

Strong repulsion when hearing Qur’an or Adhan (call for prayers).

Episodes of losing consciousness and or epileptic attacks, especially when Qur’an is recited for the possessed person.

Frequent nightmares during sleep.

Tendency to avoid people accompanied by out-of-the-norm behavior.

The jinn who possesses him might speak when Qur’an is recited for the possessed person.

Madness, as stated in the Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning): “Those who devour usury will not stand except as stands one whom Satan by his touch hath driven to [epileptic] madness…” Al-Baqarah 2:275

As for a person struck by magic he might experience the following:

Dislike of one’s spouse, as indicated in the Qur’an by the following verse (interpretation of the meaning): “…And from these two (angels) people learn that by which they cause division between man and wife…[M.M.Pickthall Qur'an Translation, Al-Baqarah, 2:102].

Different attitude in the house from that which is outside the house. For example, a person will feel that he is missing his family when is outside the house but when he goes home, love changes quickly to extreme hatred.

Inability to have sexual intercourse with one’s spouse.

Frequent miscarriage for pregnant women.

Sudden change in behavior without obvious reason.

Complete loss of appetite for food.

Thinking or imagining one has done something when in reality one has not.

Sudden obedience and/or love for a particular person.

It should be noted that if a person experiences some of the above symptoms this does not necessarily mean that he is either possessed by a jinn or struck by black magic. It might be due to physiological or psychological reasons.

How to Cure/Protect against Magic

Removing the elements of magic as was done by the Prophet when he was struck by black magic by a Jewish man called Lubaid Bin Asam.

Narrated ‘Aisha:

The Prophet continued for such-and-such period imagining that he has slept (had sexual relations) with his wives, and in fact he did not. One day he said, to me, “O ‘Aisha! Allah has instructed me regarding a matter about which I had asked Him. There came to me two men, one of them sat near my feet and the other near my head. The one near my feet, asked the one near my head (pointing at me), ‘What is wrong with this man? The latter replied, ‘He is under the effect of magic.’ The first one asked, ‘Who had worked magic on him?’ The other replied, ‘Lubaid bin Asam.’ The first one asked, ‘What material (did he use)?’ The other replied, ‘The skin of the pollen of a male date tree with a comb and the hair stuck to it, kept under a stone in the well of Dharwan.”‘ Then the Prophet went to that well and said, “This is the same well which was shown to me in the dream. The tops of its date-palm trees look like the heads of the devils, and its water looks like the Henna infusion.” Then the Prophet ordered that those things be taken out. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Won’t you disclose (the magic object)?” The Prophet said, “Allah has cured me and I hate to circulate the evil among the people.” ‘Aisha added, “(The magician) Lubaid bin Asam was a man from Bani Zuraiq, an ally of the Jews.”

[Sahih Al Bukhari Volume 8, Hadith no. 89]

Have faith in Allah (swt) and rely on HIM and his chosen people. Understand and realize that the Magicians power is evil and very limited. A basic steps to protect yourselves from Magic:-

  • Try to be clean/wudhu all the time.

  • Regularly recite Sura Al-Falaq and Sura An-Nas as much as possible.

  • Recite Ayat-ul-Kursi

  • According to Ahadith Narrated Sa'd: Allah's Apostle said,"He who eats seven Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them." (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Hadith 356)

'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The Ajwa dates of Aliyah contain heating effects and these are antidote in the early morning. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 965)

  • Cupping–removing excess blood.

  • Invoke Allah (swt) through duas...

May Allah the Almighty forgive us for our shortcomings and guide us to that which He loves and is pleased with. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah's Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Fortress of the Muslim (Hisnul-Muslim)

Invocations from the Qur'an & Sunnah. Translation of Hisnul-Muslim. (aka 'Citadel of the Believer') This is a very beautiful booklet consisting of many authentic Dua's (supplications) for a Muslim to supplicate on a daily basis and on special occasions. Author's Note... This book is an abridgment of my earlier work entitled, Adh-Dhikr wad-Du'a wal-'llaj bir-Ruqyah mina'-Kitab was-Sunnah. In order to make it small and easily portable, I have chosen only the section on words of remembrance for this abridgment. To achieve this, I only mentioned the text of the words of remembrance instead of the entire Hadith. I also limited myself to mentioning only one or two references from the original book for each Hadith. Whoever would like to know about the Companion who related a particular Hadith, or more information about where it is recorded, should refer to the original work (mentioned above). I ask Allah the Glorious, the Mighty, by His beautiful Names and by His sublime Attributes to accept this as having been done sincerely for His sake alone. I ask Him to bring me its benefits during my lifetime and after my death. May those who read it, those who print it, or have had any role in distributing it, benefit from it also. Surely He, glory be unto Him, is Capable of all things. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet, Muhammad, and upon his family and Companions and whoever follows them in piety until the Day of Judgment. Said bin Ali bin Wahaf Al-Qahtani, Safar,1409

The World of Jinn & Devils

By Umar S. Al-Ashqar Islamic Creed Series. The World Of The Jinn & Devils; In the Light of the Qur'an and Sunnah

What are jinn and devils? Where do they live? How do they impact our life? This pioneering book draws from the Qur'an and hadith in answering questions about the critical Islamic belief in Al-Ghaib, the unseen. It discusses the wisdom behind their creation, interaction with humans, eyewitness accounts, need for knowledge about them and common misconceptions about their power. The book argues that despite the dominant secular worldview that dismisses any un-observable phenomenon as non-existent, humans believe in the unseen. Furthermore, it is important to understand their place in creation to avoid satanic influences and come closer to Allah.

The Jinn & Human Sickness

The subject of the jinn is one which is of interest to many people. Folk stories abound, and many superstitious practices have arisen in Muslim cultures with regard to protection against the jinn. Many myths surround the ideas of the evil eye and envy, and there are many strange notions surrounding illnesses such as epilepsy and mental illness, which are often thought of as being caused by the jinn. This book cuts through all the confusion and identifies correct Islamic teachings on all these subjects. The jinn are real and they can indeed harm humans, but this book will teach you how to protect yourself in the manner taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him). Break free from fear, superstition and fairy stories, and familiarize yourself with the teachings of Islam on these important aspects of spirituality which the author presents here, drawing on the texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah and the writings of the respected scholars of Islam.
