The Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea is the lowest surface on Earth, at approximately 400 meters below sea level. It is located in the Middle East, bordered by Jordan, the West Bank, and Israel. It is more of a lake than a "sea," fed by the Jordan River. The fresh water evaporates, however, leaving a salt concentration which is seven times stronger than that of the ocean. No life can survive in the water. The Qur’an mentions the lowest part of the earth and states a battle took place between the Romans (and the Persians):

The Romans Empire has been defeated, in the lowest part of the land (adnal-ardh), but they, (even) after (this) defeat of theirs, will soon be victorious. [Qur’an, Surah Al Rum (Rome) 30:2-3, translated A.Yusuf Ali]

Prophet Lut (Lot):

According to Islamic and Biblical traditions, the Dead Sea is the site of the ancient city of Sodom, home of the Prophet Lut (as). The Qur’an describes the people of Sodom as ignorant, wicked, evildoers who rejected Allah’s call to righteousness. The people were murderers, thief’s, and openly practiced immoral sexual behaviour. Lut (as) persevered in preaching Allah's message, but found that even his own wife was one of the disbelievers.

Allah (swt) punished the people of this region for their wickedness. According to the Qur’an, the punishment was "… We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay, spread layer on layer, marked as from thy Lord…" [Qur’an, Surah Hud 11:82-83, translated A.Yusuf Ali]. The site of this punishment is now the Dead Sea, standing as a symbol of destruction. Read more in detail… Click Here

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reportedly tried to dissuade people from visiting the sites of Allah's punishment: "Do not enter the place of those who were unjust to themselves, unless you are weeping, lest you should suffer the same punishment as was inflicted upon them."

The Qur’an describes that the site of this punishment has been left as a sign for those who follow: "Behold! In this are Signs for those who by tokens do understand. And the (cities were) right on the highroad. Behold! In this is a Sign for those who believe!" [Qur’an Surah Al-Hijr, 15:75-77, translated A.Yusuf Ali]

A miracle of the Qur’an was its prediction of the war that was to be won by the Romans, a fact that at the time could hardly have been expected. Another miracle was its foreknowledge about the place being the lowest spot on earth, something that could only be verified with the measuring techniques we gained in the last century.

Allah (swt) Knows Best.
